Q: 1. Why do we sometimes see police officers handcuffing someone with two pairs of handcuffs linked together?
A: This is commonly known as "tandem handcuffing" or "double handcuffing," and it's primarily used in two situations:
• For exceptionally large individuals: When a suspect's wrists are too thick or their chest and back muscles are too muscular, and the chain length of one pair of handcuffs is insufficient to comfortably connect their hands behind their back, two pairs are linked together to increase the length.
• For extremely high-risk suspects: As a redundancy backup. Even if one pair of handcuffs malfunctions or is damaged, the other pair still provides restraint. This is an extreme but meticulous tactical consideration.
Q: 2. Are handcuffs easier to open or more dangerous in water (e.g., after falling into the water)?
A: More dangerous.
• They are not easier to open: Water currents and buoyancy actually increase the difficulty of opening them.
• The main danger is drowning: With hands cuffed behind the back, falling into the water makes it almost impossible to swim effectively or maintain balance, resulting in an extremely high risk of drowning. This is why extreme caution is required when enforcing the law at docks or on boats.
